Radiation from the sun, also known as sunlight, is actually a mix of electromagnetic waves that include infrared rays (IR) as well as ultraviolet rays (UV). The adverse health effects of UV rays are well documented. They are known to cause premature aging of the skin and have been linked to the development of melanoma, one of the deadliest types of skin cancer. Chronic UV exposure also suppresses the immune system and can cause significant damage to the human eye.
The Truth About UV Rays and Fluorescent Lights
Fluorescent lights, including compact fluorescent lights, or CFLs, also emit harmful UV rays. The levels of UV emission from fluorescent lights have long been considered acceptably low, but recent studies have shown that significant amounts of UV rays emanate from fluorescent lights due to the breakdown of the protective coating around the phosphor.
The Food and Drug Administration maintains that fluorescent lights are safe to use. At the same time, however, they recommend buying fluorescent lights that have additional coating to reduce the risk of exposure to harmful levels of UV rays.
