Simple Tips to Make a Room More Relaxing

11th Apr 2018

At the end of a long stressful day, a little relaxation can go a long way toward calming your nerves. But for most of us, a trip to the spa is out of the question. Instead, the best way to relax is to create a special relaxation space in your own home. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but setting the right mood can make all the difference. From colors, to scents, to lighting, here are some simple tips to make a room more relaxing.

Think About Colors

Some colors are more relaxing than others. For your relaxation room avoid bright, bold, or shiny colors. Instead, think about colors that are found in nature. Start with a pallet of gentle pastels and pick a color that feels relaxing to you. You might choose green to represent a calm meadow, or a soft blue reminiscent of the sea. Whatever color you choose, use a matt paint that won’t be too slick or shiny.

Declutter

Your relaxation room should be a space with minimal external stimulation. The world can be a stimulating place, and overstimulation can result in stress and anxiety. Even seemingly enjoyable stimulation, like going out with friends or watching your favorite television show, can produce stress inducing hormones. For your relaxation room, remove all unnecessary stimulation. This means no clutter. If this room is serving double duty as an office or guest bedroom, make sure than any item not specifically in use during your relaxation time is tucked away in drawers, an armoire, or a closet.

Electronics should also be hidden. A television set or desktop computer should either be removed or placed behind closable doors in an entertainment cabinet. And don’t bring in your smartphone. Your relaxation time should be spent without electronic stimulation.

Pleasant Smells

The sense of smell is very strongly linked to emotion. Unpleasant smells can be stress inducing and inhibit relaxation. Instead, fill your room with pleasant relaxing scents. For a constant pleasant smell, set out bowls of potpourri or even solid air fresheners. When you are in the room, light some scented candles to boost the relaxing scents in the room. Scents such as lavender, vanilla, and rose are especially relaxing.

Greenery

While you want to avoid clutter in your relaxation space, a few easy to care for plants can purify the air and invite nature into your space. Visit you local nursery and ask about simple to care for potted plants. Succulents can be easy to care for and won’t create a mess with fallen leaves or twigs. However, this is not the place to practice your green thumb. Plants and flowers that require extra care can live elsewhere in your home.

Comfortable Furniture and Materials

You will need somewhere comfortable to sit or lay down in your relaxation room. Choose furniture that is soft and inviting. You can add some blankets, throws, or pillows made of soft materials as well. A mattress or futon on the floor can provide a great place to lay down and quietly read a book or just let your mind wander.

This is not the place for that beautiful antique chair from your grandmother. Although it may be beautiful, furniture in your relaxation room should be simple and cozy. You want to be able to lounge on your furniture with as little care as possible for maintaining fragile items.

Fresh Air

If you live in a house or apartment with poor air circulation, you can still create a room with fresher air than usual. A simple air purifier can make a big difference in how a room smells and feels. And you don’t need to break the bank. Most rooms can be purified with a pretty basic air purifier. You can put it on a timer to run for an hour or so before you get home. Or, you can turn it on when you enter the room. The noise it makes is almost white noise and shouldn’t be too jarring.

Candles

Humans have a natural attraction to fire. Ever since the earliest humans sat around a campfire, humans have loved to watch flames flicker. Brining some candles into your relaxation room can create a calming focal point. Using scented candles can also enhance the relaxing odors in your room. For a cleaner burning candle, turn to soy or natural beeswax instead of paraffin. This can be especially useful if you are allergic to smoke.

You can use candles that come in glass containers, or you can purchase loose candles. For loose candles, place them on a ceramic plate or another non-flammable base and surround them with sand or pebbles. Having a few loose candles of different sizes can create a gentle contrast that is visually appealing.

Lighting

One of the most important features of your relaxation space is the light in the room. There are several options here. Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages. One of the best light sources for relaxation is natural sunlight. However, not every room has access to the outdoors. And even rooms with windows don’t benefit from sunlight at night or in overcast or stormy weather. If your room doesn’t have an exterior window, or if you will be using it outside of daylight hours, you can create a calming light with the right types of decorative light covers. One option is to install a dimmer on an overhead fixture, such as a ceiling fan with a light. You can also turn off the main lights in the room and light the room with a small lamp. Using one or more small lamps can create a calming atmosphere. But make sure your lights give enough light to keep your eyes from straining to see in the dark.

Decorative Light Covers

One unique option for lighting in a relaxation room is to install decorative light covers over existing fluorescent lights. If your relaxation room has fluorescent lighting, you have to do something. Unfiltered fluorescent light can cause eyes soreness and eye strain, as well as headaches and other signs of stress. That’s the last thing you need in your relaxation room. But adding a decorative light cover cuts the harmful fluorescent light, providing a softer, gentler light that is easier on the eyes, body, and mind.

Unique Images on Decorative Light Covers

In addition to filtering out the harmful effects of fluorescent light, decorative light covers can make a room feel bigger and more open. Using different types of light covers and unique images, you can create a lighting scheme that transports you to another place or time. For example, blue sky images can make a room feel open to the daytime sky, even at night. On the other end of the spectrum, Astronomy Fluorescent Light Panels can simulate the joy of staring up into a night sky. You can also choose to get creative. An undersea image can transport you to a place you would normally never get to visit. Images of passing fish and gently waving underwater vegetation can make you feel like you are right there under the sea. Images of sandy white beaches and clear blue oceans can simulate an island paradise, right from the comfort of your own home.
